The collection includes three binders compiled of early newspaper article scans mentioning canal development. James River and Kanawha Company Papers - John Jordan

Scope and Contents This file consists of a contract for locks between the James River and Kanawha Company and James Jordan, dated November 26th, 1835. The contract also includes specification for locks, articles of agreement, and a signature by James Cabell. The file additionally includes a letter to John Jordan from W.P. Munford noting that a lock contract has been voided (dated October 3rd, 1830). Finally, the file contains a page of handwritten notes on financing for the lock, as well as participant...

Photographs of Belle Isle and the Falls of James River at Richmond, Virginia

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a photograph of a river scene of 'Great Falls' of James River at Richmond, Virginia. There is a stone wall on the far side of the river in the background, which is evidence of a former canal. The second photograph is of the ca. 1833 engraving of the painting 'Richmond, from the hill above the waterworks' by George Cooke.

Plat Map and Land Survey by William Paxton for James Willson

Scope and Contents

A survey and small map, dated 1818, of 115 acres of land in Rockbridge County, Virginia, which belonged to James Willson. The survey includes the names William Cunningham, Jonathan Poague, Rueben Grigsby, and Thomas McFarland, whose lands border the Willson property. The North Fork of the James River and Mill Creek are also mentioned in the survey.
